Zero-rated and GST-free invoice templates for billing US clients
Billing a US company from Canada or Australia usually means 0% GST, but the invoice still has to say so. These templates show the tax line at $0.00, name the supply as zero-rated (Canada) or GST-free (Australia), and include every field the CRA and ATO list for invoices.

How to use it
- Check the sale qualifies first: read our guide on whether to charge GST to US customers. The template does not make a taxable sale zero-rated.
- Download the DOCX for your country, or the XLSX if you want the totals calculated.
- Fill your legal name, address and GST/HST number or ABN, and the US customer's legal name and address.
- Canada: complete the Schedule VI, Part V section in the tax note (s. 7 for most services, s. 23 for advisory, professional or consulting services, s. 10.1 for intangible personal property).
- Keep evidence of the customer's non-resident status, such as the signed contract and address, with your copy of the invoice.
Worked example
Maple Labs in Toronto bills Acme Robotics in Austin for 40 hours of integration work at $150 and a $2,400 annual subscription. Subtotal $8,400, GST/HST (zero-rated, 0%) $0.00, total $8,400. Charged at Ontario's 13% HST, the same invoice would have added $1,092 to the bill. Wattle AI in Sydney sends the same two lines as a tax invoice with each item marked GST-free and GST of $0.00.
Who it's for
- United States
- Not needed by US companies; US state sales tax is a separate question decided by each state.
- Canada
- GST/HST registrants billing non-resident businesses. The CRA chart sets which details a registered buyer needs at under $100, $100 to $499.99 and $500 or more; this template shows all of them.
- Australia
- GST-registered businesses billing non-residents who are not in Australia. If you are not registered for GST, call it an invoice, not a tax invoice, and drop the GST lines.
